Bands and Orchestra 2019-2020 Information

Greetings Cardinal Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Families!

 

Band camp will be on two separate 1/2-days the week before school begins: 

For Concert Band groups:

  • Tuesday, August 20, 8:00am-12:00pm

  • Wednesday, August 21, 8:00am-12:00pm

 

For Jazz Band: 

  • Wednesday, August 21, 12:30pm-4:00pm

 

Concert Band students, please attend both days, as we will be covering several areas that are critical to a successful start of the year. This will include, but not limited to: 

  • Handing out music (concert and pep band folders)

  • Rehearsal time to get our chops back in shape

  • Activities to build a positive and fun community

  • Turning in recommended donations which will go towards sheet music, transportation costs, etc. These donations can be submitted via School Pay.

  • Receiving necessary paperwork (forms to fill out)

  • Getting fitted for a marching uniform

 

Music Retreat

This is not a required activity, but it is an AMAZINGLY fun activity that builds important community with the students. The cost of this is approximately $125. There will be scholarships available for students on free/reduced lunch or other special circumstances. For more information and pictures go to www.cardinalmusic.net

Pep Band Performances at Home Football Games

  • Friday, September 20th, 6pm-9pm

  • Friday, October 4th, 6pm-9pm

  • Friday, October 25th, 6pm-9pm

  • Wednesday, October 30th, 6pm-9pm

Music-A-Thon

 

This is a required performance fundraiser that works really well for us. Basically, the music department live-streams music performances non-stop and people donate money through GoFundMe. We rotate between Freshman band, Wind Ensemble, choir, jazz band, and guitar class. This also includes sub-sets from these groups. When not performing, students can go to the food room, game room, or study room. This is a super-fun activity that brings in a good amount of money for the music department.

President's Own Marine Band is touring the west coast and will be performing in our area! This is not required but if you can get tickets (they are free) then go!

Winter Bands and Orchestra Concert

  • Students show up at 6:00pm

  • 7:00pm - 8:30pm

Pep Band Performances for Basketball Games

 

The bands will be performing at select home basketball games. These performances are fun and create a larger sense of community for the school. Dates and times TBA. 

 

Band and Orchestra Tour

 

This tour is not required, however the experience for the group will be best if every student participates. The cost will be somewhere between $850-$950. Partial scholarships will be available for students on free/reduced lunch and special circumstances. The tour will focus on music in the entertainment industry. 

  • Dates: Thursday, February 13 through Monday, February 17th. Please save these dates

  • Disney is a billion dollar industry and MUSIC is a key factor in their success. We will perform in the park, witnessing the "backstage" sector of the park prior to the performance. We will also perform in a working Disney recording studio, with a Disney conductor and sound engineer. During this session, students will learn about a career as a soundtrack musician. Part of this experience will include performing music from different scenes in Disney movies, being recorded, and then watching that scene from the movie being played back with OUR performance on the soundtrack.

  • Students will see a performance of the LA Philharmonic (upon availability)

  • Students will have a performance clinic from a college director (which college TBA)

  • Students will have time to enjoy Disneyland and Universal Studios

  • Other opportunities might be added if allowed within the cost of the tour.

Recital Night (concert bands and orchestra students only)

  • Students perform a solo OR a small ensemble piece that they have been working on since January

  • Wednesday, February 26th, 7:00pm in the auditorium

  • This is in preparation for the district solo & ensemble festival at Wilson HS that Saturday

PIL District Solo & Ensemble Festival

 

This is a district-wide festival that provides an opportunity for students to perform for an adjudicator as a solo or with a small ensemble (duet/quartet/etc).

  • Saturday, February 29th

  • Student performance times will be determined

  • Winners of each category move on to the state competition on May 2nd. 

End of Year Bands and Orchestra Concert 

  • Thursday, May 28th

  • 7:00pm-8:30pm

Starlight Parade (marching band only, but anybody can participate if they aren’t in the concert band groups)

  • Saturday, May 30th

  • 6:00pm - 10:30pm

  • The parade begins at 8:30pm but we do not know what our unit number is so it is difficult to know what time we'll end.

Commencement (Band, Orchestra, and Jazz will perform in some capacity)

  • Tentatively slated for Sunday, May 31st. 

  • 6:00pm - 10:00pm is the window. Time subject to change

Other festival performances and activities will be added as information is made available. 

Band and Orchestra Tour 2020

Update information and Final Date of Trip, June 5, 2019

 

The LHS Bands (marching and jazz), along with the LHS Orchestra, will be traveling to Los Angeles to study careers in music. This will include performances at Disneyland, a Movie Soundtrack Recording Workshop, and performance clinics from professional musicians. 

 

The dates for the trip will be Thursday, February 13th, through Monday, February 17th. 

 

The initial deposit through School Pay of $100 is due by June 14th. This represents your student’s commitment to go on the trip. As the cost is shared across all students, there will not be any refunds. Dropping from the trip for any reason will not provide a refund. If you need more time before you can deposit, just contact me to let me know. 

 

Fundraising efforts will be available. The rest of the payment schedule will be as follows:

  • $150 by Friday, July 12th

  • $150 by Friday, August 16th

  • $150 by Friday, September 13th

  • $150 by Friday, October 11th

  • $150 by Friday, November 15th

  • $100 by Friday, December 13th

  • This is a total of $950. 

The payment schedule will adjust if the trip costs less. AS OF 8/6/19 IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO MAKE PAYMENTS. Please contact Mr. Kays if there is need for financial assistance.
